Why?
For one, you use your hands ALL THE TIME in both those sports.

Even a slight catch or a tip of the finger from either type of ball will Jam your finger which is not fun per say.
Lets break this down a bit further so you can see the anatomy of ones hand.
In your fingers, you have your Distal Phalanges, Middle Phalanges, and Proximal Phalanges.
Those are the fingers that you are most prone to get a Jammed Finger which will lead to swelling, limited range of motion, and possibly a fracture depending on the severity of the impact or where you are hit in the hand/fingers.
The join on your finger that is most prone to overextension/injury is the Middle Phalange in particular.
Typically, one can have up to 100 -110 degrees of flexion/movement but when extended beyond that or experiencing a high force of impact, this would lead to a jammed finger (Proximal inter-phalangeal joint)
Typically Jammed Fingers can take anywhere from 2 - 8 weeks to heal depending on the treatment also. I like to use chinese rubbing medicine that seems to speed up the healing time a bit.....But it still takes a while.... The best thing to do is to use the RICE method and to stay off of it from any action for a good amount of time until all the pain and swelling goes away and you can return to the normal range of motion etc.
If your chinese, or asian in general, you know what I'm talking about....This is the smelly good stuff right here. Rub away with a smile on your face! :p
Anyways, because of this, I've been reduced to not being to lift or do anything when I was planning to do so over my winter break. All I'm doing right now is a ton of cardio and legs. I must say, my calves have gotten a lot bigger than I expected lately. Dunk soon?
Hopefully I can get back to a lifting state soon. Until then, train hard folks!
